Origin of the Name Prague
A beautiful city in the heart of Europe, Prague was once a key settlement at the crossing of trade routes. One legend is that it was founded by princess Libuse, who had the gift to see into the future. „I can see a great city, the fame of which will touch the stars…“ she announced. „In the forests near the River Vltava, you will find a man hewing a threshold“. The Czech for threshold is ‚prah‘, so this may well be the origin of the city’s name. Yet another interpretation is that the name comes from the arid (‚vyprahlý‘) site where Prague Castle and Vysehrad castle were established. This suggests that the origins of the city lay in these fortified places, with fords traversing the Vltava river and simple roads allowing commercial activity. |
Prague History
The actual history of this area goes much further back, though: it was populated as long ago as 4000 BCE. Later, the Celts settled there, having one of their most important fortified settlements on top of a hill above Zbraslav on the south side of the city. German tribes pushed the Celt settlers out of these lands. But the country was named after the Celtic tribe of the Boji – Bohemia. We invite you to the capital city of the Czech Republic, to explore its beautiful atmosphere and historic architecture. We will arrange an airport transfer and a tour through Prague for you in a private car or minivan, with guide service excursions to all the major sights. |
